Synthesis strategy
Synthesis is about grammar.
Most of the grammar that you have learned in P1 to P5 are applied in synthesis.
However, there are some commonly tested grammar items in synthesis which you ought to take note.
For example,
1. Verbs (Plural subject will take plural verbs, Singular subjects will take singular verbs)
Plural verbs have no 's' while singular verbs have 's'.
Verb tenses are also tested in the synthesis. (Some verbs need to add 'ed' while others do not)
2. SV agreement. -- SV agreement can be found in our preston english. Please note the various subject verb as below.
Neither of --- singular verb
Neither nor/either nor/Either or/Neither or/ --- the verb will follow the subject closest to it.
Eg . Neither John nor Peter is.....
Either Fred or his friends are .....
3. Punctuation. --- Punctuation is also one aspect of synthesis which you need to take note. It is part of grammar testing.
Eg. The son, who is my friend's nephew, likes to eat ice cream.
In this case, the noun phrase has to be in between two commas. So either two or none.
Please remember to highlight or underline the verbs, tenses or punctuation so that you will know that it is correctly done.

Difference between lay and lie.
Present Past Past participle
Lay Laid Lain
Lie Lay Lain
How to remember the difference?
Lie -- Lie down on something.
Lay -- Lay something on the table.
Eg.
You lay something down.
People lie down.
I think pupils should remember the past tense form to avoid confusion. So, just concentrate on the laid and lay.
She lay down on the sofa. (Past tense)
She laid the cloth on the table. (Past tense)

Right way to write answers for similarities and differences.
There is a proper way to write similarities and differences between two things.
Eg.
Differences.
Correct example.
The fungi cannot make food while the non-flowering plant can make food.
You must compare the same things. Do not compare different things.
Wrong eg.
The fungi cannot make food while the non-flowering plant reproduce by spores.
This is a wrong example for differences.
Similarity.
Both fungi and non-flowering plant reproduce by spores.

Respiration is not the same as breathing! They are two totally different concepts.
5 Endurance and 4 diligence,
Note that respiration is not breathing.
Respiration is the breaking down of food to produce energy.
It occurs in the cells.
Youtube video for respiration : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdtAu5JgOV0&feature=related
Breathing is the mechanical action of exchange of gases between our lungs and
the environment.

Connecting your writing!
5 Endurance,
Please elaborate and describe so that you can connect one sentence of your writing to another.
Example:
The fire spread and pandamonium broke out. The car driver quickly drove away from the building.
(Actually, i cannot penalise this two sentences. However, you should elaborate more and extend the first sentence so that it connects the two sentences better and gives the reader a more complete picture of what is going on.)
The fire spread and pandamonium broke out. Everyone was shouting, screaming and crying. They ran helter-skelter in many directions. Then, the car driver quickly drove away from the building.
(This second part would give a more detailed and complete picture of what had actually happened. The yellow section extended and gave a more complete picture of the pandamonium as described before.)
So you should follow this way to write in all your writing. Be it in compositions, situation writings, or science answers in section B of your exam paper.

Atrip to Australia, Syndey (Cymone Woo)
My Trip To Sydney, Australia
During the June holidays, I went to Sydney with my family members on the 11th of June. I took a flight there and the journey took seven hours. We landed at Sydney International Airport. After collecting our luggage, we waited for a bus to take us to our hotel. The weather in Sydney was quite cold.
On the first day, I felt happy and at the same time, tired. We proceeded to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I liked it because I could see the beautiful scenery while crossing that bridge. I could see the magnificent and grand view of the Sydney Opera House, a historical monument of Sydney.
On the second day, we went to Bondi Beach. I loved the cool and refreshing breeze there. I went closer to the waves to feel them crashing against my feet. I loved the picturesque view of the beach. At Bondi Beach, we sat by a Beach Café and sipped hot chocolate.
On 18th June, we took the flight back to Singapore with reluctant hearts. We had enjoyed ourselves very much visiting Sydney, Australia. This trip has left an indelible mark in my mind.

Metaphors 2
Metaphors are comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way. Metaphors are a way to describe something. Authors use them to make their writing more interesting or entertaining.
Unlike similes that use the words “as” or “like” to make a comparison, metaphors state that something is something else.
Read the statements that contain metaphors in italics. Then complete the statements that explain the metaphors.
1. Brian was a wall, bouncing every tennis ball back over the net.
This metaphor compares Brian to a wall because __________.
a. He was very strong.
b. He was very tall.
c. He kept returning the balls.
d. His body was made of cells.
2. We would have had more pizza to eat if Tammy hadn’t been such a hog.
Tammy was being compared to a hog because she __________.
a. looked like a hog
b. ate like a hog
c. smelled like a hog
d. was as smart as a hog
3. Cindy was such a mule. We couldn’t get her to change her mind.
The metaphor compares Cindy to a mule because she was __________.
a. always eating oats
b. able to do hard work
c. raised on a farm
d. very stubborn
4. The poor rat didn’t have a chance. Our old cat, a bolt of lightning, caught his prey.
The cat was compared to a bolt of lightning because he was __________.
a. very fast
b. very bright
c. not fond of fleas
d. very old
5. Even a child could carry my dog, Dogface, around for hours. He’s such a feather.
This metaphor implies that Dogface __________.
a. is not cute
b. looks like a bird
c. is not heavy
d. can fly

Metaphors
Metaphors
So, what is a metaphor? A metaphor is like a simile. That's because it is a comparison that is made between things, which is not always likely or obvious. However, the explicit use of the word 'like' or 'as' which you see in a simile, is not used in a metaphor which is rather a comparison of two unlike things using the verb "to be". Hence, a metaphor sounds more forceful and suggestive, but is still very common in speech. Common metaphors include "the neck of the woods" or "the foot of the mountain". These can be seen to be similar to similes - they suggest a comparison but do not make it explicitly. We often use metaphors without realising it. For instance, when we say that your parents 'bark a command' at you, you are comparing them to a dog, and hence engaging in metaphor!
Other Metaphors
A heart of stone (from Rebecca)
He has the heart of a lion
You are the sun in my sky
You are the light in my life
She is my East and my West, my compass.
You had better pull your socks up.
Life is a mere dream, a fleeting shadow on a cloudy day.
Love is a lemon - either bitter of sweet (from Scott)
Drowning in the sea
Jumping for joy
Rolling in dough
Apple of my eye
Leaping with laughter - From Trinita
The silence was a blood-curdling scream of anguish,
set out to break my soul - from Kiwi

Dictation correction - 27 July
It took David well over an hour to cover a distance he would normally have walked in about fifteen minutes. But at last, having dodged road blocks and a small column of marching soldiers, he came in sight of the small cluster of buildings huddled in a tiny valley.
He climbed up a thick, old, wind-blown hawthorn tree and peered at the buildings, looking for any sign of life. He wished he had some binoculars. There seemed to be no Germans about, which was odd as he knew the farm was being lived in by a large number of soldiers, probably all along the main road.

Dictation correction
Dark monsoon clouds gathered in the sky. Ah Peck looked out of his window and waved at Li Ping, his granddaughter, who was getting onto her school bus. Beaming at him, she waved back. The bus disappeared round the corner, and as the rain started to pour, it brought back vivid memories of last November.
It was another bad day for Ah Peck, an old ice-cream peddler. It had been raining the past week and business was poor. Ah Peck vowed, no matter how difficult life was, he would do his best to support Li Ping. Li Ping's parents had passed away in a tragic accident just a year before and she had to move in with Ah Peck. He was her only kin.
